Epic new novel Women at War follows 14 year old Greta, and her terrifying experiences as WW2 comes to an end in Europe. Based on real events, its plot-driven narrative and compelling female lead characters show women at war with themselves, at war with each other and at war with men.
British author Christine Lord’s book is inspired by her numerous interviews with German women who settled in the UK and US after the war, as well as conversations with camp survivors, German soldiers and Allied veterans including English, Scottish, US, Canadian, Dutch, Soviet and French personnel.
Women at War takes readers on an odyssey through Germany during the dying days of World War Two. Through the eyes of fourteen-year-old Greta, the story highlights the differences and commonalties in how men and women are affected by conflict as soldiers and civilians. It is an unforgettable journey of horror, hope and transformation, which answers questions about identity and how it is shaped.
The book offers every reader a fundamental challenge:
In war, what would you do to survive?
SYNOPSIS
It is spring 1945 and World War Two is coming to a bloody end. Battalions of invading soldiers are marching towards the capital. Thousands of displaced and desperate civilians are also on the move. An unstoppable tide of broken men, women and children.
Greta is fourteen years old and running for her life across the war-ravaged German countryside. Accompanied by her single mother Helga and younger brother Hans, they travel through a land filled with rape, murder and retribution.
Local communities are starving, some vengeful. Strangers an easy target.
Humanity at its best and worst.
Greta has to keep moving to survive. During her journey, she has to reinvent her life and history many times. Pretending to be a Jewish survivor, a Swiss national, a nurse; anything to stay alive and escape her family’s Nazi connections.
Berlin holds great danger but the possibility of a new life.
Or will the ghosts from Greta’s past destroy any chance of a future?
